A rising star in Europe, Michele Mariotti has been praised for the fine balance of intellect
and passion, which he brings to every score. “Mariotti's conducting laid a beautifully

Born and raised in Pesaro, Mariotti made his conducting debut at the Teatro Verdi in
Salerno in 2005. Two years later he succeded Daniele Gatti as the Principal Conductor
of Teatro Comunale in Bologna at the unanimous request of the orchestra musicians,
following the . . . tremendous success of his Simon Boccanegra (released on DVD by
ArtHaus Musik in 2007). Mariotti’s subsequent productions, including the recent La
Gazza Ladra and I Puritani (to be released on DVD by Decca in 2010), have made
Teatro Comunale a magnet for the young audiences of Bologna.
The Metropolitan Opera has engaged Mariotti for three consequtive seasons starting
with 2012-13, when he will make his Met debut leading a production of Carmen. Future
engagements also include I Puritani at Opera Bastille, La Donna del Lago at the Royal
Opera House Covent Garden, as well as the opening of 2013-14 season at the Liceu
Barcelona.
Earlier this season Mariotti has made a remarkably successful North American debut
leading the Washington National Opera and the Los Angeles Opera in two different
productions of Mariage of Figaro. “Mariotti’s handling of Rossini's ensembles produced
a delicious layer cake of voices.” (LA Daily News, December 2009) “Mariotti brought
fresh animation, nuance and emphasis to phrase after phrase. He paid keen attention to
the subtlest gradations of dynamics so that the buildup of volume delivered a delicious
payoff each time.” (Baltimore Sun, September 2009)
Mariotti studied composition at the Conservatorio Rossini in Pesaro and, in 2004,
received the suma cum laude in conducting at the Accademia Musicale Pescarese in the
class of Donato Renzetti. In addition to opera engagements, Mariotti’s has been
collaborating with Juan Diego Florez and Rolando Villazon on concert programs for
Barcelona’s Liceu and Theatre Champs Elysées. He has also developed fulfilling
relationships with Orchestra Sinfonica di Pesaro, Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic, and
Maggio Musicale Orchestra, among others.
