Currently Artistic and General Director of the State Academic Mariinsky Theatre, Maestro Gergiev recently celebrated his 20th anniversary as General Director and the Theatre's 225th anniversary season. He is currently directing the construction of a new theatre (Mariinsky II) scheduled for completion at the end of 2011, which will be followed by a major renovation and technical update of Mariinsky I (built in 1860). In November 2006 . . . he celebrated a gala opening of the Mariinsky Concert Hall, reviewed as acoustically one of the very best of all modern concert halls and a major competitor to classic venues such as Musikverein and Carnegie Hall. These developments will put the Mariinsky Theatre in a unique class as the only cultural institution which can stage opera, ballet and concerts all at the same time at home and simultaneously tour its opera, ballet, and orchestra internationally. By 2011 the Mariinsky will also have an outdoor festival performance site and an indoor multi-purpose performance space developed in New Holland, an island developed originally by Peter the Great.
Maestro Gergiev annually leads both the Mariinsky Opera and Orchestra on international tours. He is Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Conductor of the World Orchestra for Peace (founded by Sir Georg Solti in 1995), Founder and Artistic Director of the Stars of the White Nights Festival, New Horizons Festival, the Moscow Easter Festival, the Mikkeli International Festival, the Red Sea Festival and the Rotterdam Gergiev Festival. He regularly appears with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and in 2010 will conduct a three week Stravinsky Festival with the New York Philharmonic.
