East Village Opera Company Nominated for Best Classical Crossover Grammy AwardDecember 15, 2008New York City's powerhouse rock/opera group, East Village Opera Company (EVOC), has been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Classical Crossover Album category for their Decca released Olde School. This is the band's first nomination for the illustrious award. 2008 has found EVOC touring the world with stops in the US, Canada, Peru, Mexico and Europe. The band that transforms classical melodies into rock epics on their third album, Olde School, has been gaining critical acclaim from all over the country. The New York Times states, "The idea here is not simply to transfer familiar opera excerpts to rock instrumentation but to reimagine them entirely... [The band] plays with vigor and inventiveness... You could get used to hearing these things this way." The Chicago Tribune adds, "Nobody puts a fresher, friskier contemporary spin on opera's greatest hits than the East Village Opera Company." EVOC will continue their extensive touring in 2009, bringing with them their unique take on recognizable arias by giants like Wagner, Handel, Verdi, Bach, and Puccini that "would make the original composers proud" (Keyboard Magazine). The band's live show is a must-see. As Time Out New York raves, EVOC "...electrifies the classics for a new generation."
